Worn Look Tutorial

Adobe Photoshop » Text Effects » October 10, 2008
Submitted by attitudedesign »

In this tutorial we will take a look at creating one of those small details which can really make a design. Once you have read this tutorial it is my hope that if you ever have to create a “grundgy” looking design you will automatically adopt this technique for areas of it. We are going to take a look specifically at applying rough texture to type but the way in which we do this can also be applied to imagery, logos and anything else that may need to look worn out or distorted. This is a simple technique but one I have found must useful to know about as it gives you another card to play in a creative brief. Also I hope that this tutorial sparks off other ideas and that others can write in and let everyone know about how they create worn out graphics.

Getting Dirty in Photoshop CS3

Adobe Photoshop » Photo Effects » October 10, 2008
Submitted by layersmagazine »

Look around and you’ll see lots of trends in the world of design: trendy colors, trendy website looks, and trendy fonts, to name a few. One of the “hot” looks in Photoshop-processed photos is the “gritty” look—one that brings out tons of details, almost to the point of being overdone. Needless to say, this isn’t ideal for portraits of high-fashion models, but with the right subject, this look is easy to achieve and very effective. We’ll also take a peek at a popular look for type: the grungy, roughened look. This technique uses a layer mask and filters, a combination that offers many different possibilities.

t seems like the grunge style is the hot thing for everybody to do. Despite it being popular, a good grunge style needs to be executed properly. Many artwork I have seen feature a grunge style for the content and other important areas, but they forget about the border! I think the border is very import in creating a grunge styled work. In this tutorial, you will learn an easy way of creating decent looking borders. Let's start!

The Louis Daguerre Effect

Adobe Photoshop » Photo Effects » October 10, 2008
Submitted by photoshopsupport »

The world’s first photographic process was announced in Paris in 1839 by Louis Daguerre. It used a silver-plated copper sheet that was sensitized with iodine, exposed, and then developed in mercury vapor. Early images were of architectural subjects or landscapes, but soon the process was also used for portraiture, and it became particularly popular in France and America.

Graffiti stamp art in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop » Photo Effects » October 10, 2008

Adding urban flavour to your artwork is easy. Derek Lea defies convention with the Brush tool, and explains how presets work… Photoshop’s Brush tool doesn’t necessarily have to be used for painting. It can be a useful stamp for creating instances of stencil or stamp art as well. Instead of painting a stroke, you can use a single mouse-click to create an impression of your brush tip on the canvas. Granted, it doesn’t sound too impressive until you imagine using compelling artwork as a brush tip instead of a hard- or soft-edged ellipse. Arguably the most important thing to consider, in addition to the technique of stamping instead of painting, is that you need to get your artwork on the tip of that brush.

Distressed effects in Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop » Effects » October 10, 2008

When you want to create convincing imperfections within your digital work, forget filters – the resources you need are all around you… Make no mistake, environmental conditions will have an adverse effect on the longevity of any artwork posted outdoors. But that which is detrimental to quality also produces a new form of beauty. That beauty can be found in the distressed effects that are the direct result of weather, or normal wear and tear caused by activity in the immediate surroundings. Many digital artists recognise the beauty within these tactile imperfections, but more often than not, the reproduction of these effects is less than impressive. The first thing you need to accept is the fact that filters won’t do the job for you. A filter may promise everything from dust to scratches to photocopier-style imperfections, but the results are rarely authentic. If you want the job done right, do it yourself. Keep an eye out for naturally occurring patterns in things like rust and peeling paint. These can be useful when manipulated and incorporated into alpha channels.
