Boost your images with Lab colour
Source computerarts »
Working in Lab enables you to add punch without affecting detail, luminance or contrast. Sam Hampton-Smith shows you how. Although it is often overlooked, Lab colour is an extremely useful colour space in Photoshop that enables you to separate luminance information from colour information. The more familiar RGB colour space achieves colour and brightness through mixing channels of red, green and blue light. By mixing the three channels, each with its own level of colour and saturation, an overall range of tones and colours is achieved. Conversely, Lab splits all the colour information into two channels, but separates the lightness, or luminance, onto a third independent channel. This difference in channel make-up enables some eye-popping colour treatments and corrections that just aren’t possible in RGB, all without compromising the luminance, contrast or detail of the image.

Dressing up fashion photography
Source computerarts »
Combine fashion photography with vector graphics to create a multilayered illustration in Photosho. Fashion work can be some of the most rewarding in the world. It’s a great outlet for creativity because the clothing brands need to be on the cutting edge and stand out, with attitude, against all the competition. Most fashion art buyers are very creative themselves, which means that as long as there is a strong theme or treatment, anything goes. Designing for the fashion industry can be a long process. After a photoshoot, the right shots have to be chosen and retouched before you can get down to the applied treatment. This is where the fun begins but, when creating artwork for fashion, you have to consider the range and target audience at all stages of the process as well as keeping the art buyer in the loop. In the following tutorial, we’re going to treat this as a semi-live job and include some elements of client interaction as if the buyer is actually in the loop. When working on a live job, the buyer can refuse the job at any point, which means if you send them an end result that you think is great, they won’t necessarily share your enthusiasm. So for this tutorial you’ll need to find a good selection of raw materials, such as card and paper, that sit well together. What follows is only a basic insight into this technique. It’s actually limitless – you can use cartons, cans, soap boxes or any other item that you think will fit into your theme. Before you begin, you need to have a good think about the theme. We haven’t included this stage in the tutorial, but sketching some rough ideas is always a good place to start.

Defringing hair
Source computerarts »
Selecting fine strands of hair is one of the trickiest jobs in Photoshop, and it’s so hard to find bald models. Here Justin Maller shows you some clever techniques for making accurate selections of complex subjects. Accurately extracting models and their hair from a background is one of the most irritating and time-consuming tasks a digital imager can be faced with – trying to make a smooth and detailed selection can leave you thumping the desk in frustration. Making selections with the Pen tool can occasionally give you an adequate result, but it is virtually impossible to capture all of the fine strands and flyaway hairs using this technique. Both the Magic Wand and the Magnetic Lasso selection tools are similarly ineffective, since most images do not have a universal selection tolerance that will enable you to wand out unwanted backdrops, and even if you do manage to walk the incredibly frustrating magnetic tightrope, the background will still be present in between hair strands, leaving you with annoying halos. Fear not; lateral thinking reveals a relatively straightforward solution. The crux of this process lies in using channels to make a detailed alpha mask for your image (which will facilitate a similarly detailed selection), as well as in harnessing the Layer Matting features to refine your final extraction. In this tutorial, we’ll guide you through this process, as well as show you some pre- and postproduction tips to maximise the potential of your photos. We’ll also explore the use of channels in post-production image retouching, and have a bit of fun balancing out our image with adjustment layers.

Give new life to stock imagery
Source computerarts »
Tom Lane explains how to transform the dullest stock image into great-looking artwork. Does this sound familiar? You’re asked to create some artwork for an advert publicising a new product, and the company is supplying the main image you have to work with. They call you up and say, “We’re sending you the image now. Do what you can with it!” A comment like that hardly inspires confidence, and inevitably when the file arrives you open it up and see what can only be described as flat, boring stock imagery. This tutorial demonstrates a series of techniques for coping with this kind of situation. I’ll explain how to work with standard stock imagery and give it some life, while leaving room in the composition for the copy and logos that any self-respecting advert requires. Of course, you don’t need to follow the steps to the letter, but I hope that my advice will give you some valuable pointers.
