Rendering Tutorial - Photoshop Alloy Wheel

Adobe Photoshop » Designing » September 16, 2008
Source archive.cardesignnews »

In a modern design studio the ability to use Photoshop, or indeed any PC or Macintosh based image-editing and rendering package, can lead to faster and more consistent work on a great variety of levels. Tie this with Alias 3D and PowerPoint skills and you become a more employable designer. This tutorial will guide you through a method you can use to design/render alloy wheels using Adobe Photoshop, and is intended for those with a reasonable understanding of working in Photoshop. This 2D technique can be used to quickly illustrate and explore a range of design proposals, in conjunction with 3D modeling. Along the way you will hopefully learn new tools and techniques that you can apply to your own Photoshop work.

Ornate Lettering Process

Adobe Photoshop » Designing » September 16, 2008
Source gomediazine »

I’m going to show you the process as to how I do my ornate lettering. This is a new design I did for Stone Sour that utilized this technique. Now right off the bat, this is not a step by step tutorial. It’s more of a look behind the scenes into how I work. The very core of this process is having a solid drawing ability and a good understanding of letterforms, typography, spacing, composition, yada yada. Also, I assume you know your way around Illustrator, Photoshop, and 3D Studio Max. There is no simple process to this - so yep, that means it actually takes work! So for those of you who are only interested in a shortcut to get this look, you can probably just skip reading. Because there really isn’t anything short about this. It’s good old fashioned hand lettering that’s tweaked and finalized on the computer for a vector final result.

Ornate lettering

Go Media’s Jeff Finley shows you how to create ornate lettering from sketches and vectors in Illustrator, make it three-dimensional in 3ds Max and fine-tune the final result in Photoshop Ornate lettering isn’t anything new. It’s been around for centuries and there are many ways to create it. You can get out your pens, pencils, brushes, rulers, French curves and a compass, but I can almost guarantee that most young designers today would rather just use the computer than create it by hand.

From Sketch to Vector Illustration

Hey everyone! Welcome back to the GoMediaZine. There has been such a wonderful response on my vector art tutorial “Beautiful Vector Illustration” that I thought I better write another one. If you recall in that tutorial I discussed how to create vector illustrations using photographs as your starting point. A technique of vector illustrating that takes a little bit more skill that I did not cover is starting with a hand drawn sketches. I will focus on that technique of vector illustrating for this tutorial. For those of you without good sketching ability – please don’t jump ship just yet! I will also discuss a number of tips and techniques to using your pen tool that applies to ALL vector artists – so keep reading. You’ll still learn a thing or two. And who knows – maybe you try to sketch something anyway. I am going to meander a bit between different sketches, but here is one example of a vector illustration that was based off of a sketch.

Designing Ultra SceneXCore Apparel!

This is a tutorial or a simple “how-to” guide to help you with your design projects. This is not the end-all, be-all way of doing things. We will try to make what is normally a long and detailed process of creating commercial art into a simple and easy-to-follow guide. We encourage your use of artistic license and creative vision to make high quality work for your clients. I wrote a brief tutorial on Apparel Design roughtly a year ago and it received a lot of good response. But it’s a bit outdated now. We’ve done lots more apparel work, including stuff for Avenged Sevenfold, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Evanescence, Atticus Clothing, Strhess Clothing, and tons more notable bands and clothing companies.

Old School Type - Line Gradients

Adobe Photoshop » Designing » September 16, 2008
Source gomediazine »

One of our readers suggested we write a tutorial explaining how to do this cool text effect. On the Dragonforce logo above, the basis of my typography was sketched on paper first and then vectored in Illustrator using the Pen Tool. The process for creating the base logo is not included in this tutorial. Instead, we are going to take the base logo and add that cool “line gradient” effect that you see inside the actual letters. This gives the text an old-school or vintage feel to it. This look is prevalent in wood engraving and sign lettering. You can do this effect with any typeface or font because the principle is the same.

A Pseudo-Sugar Skull: From Start to Finish

Hey people! It’s Dave again giving you all yet another excuse to get your knowledge on. This isn’t as direct as my previous Gigposter Tutorial (by the way - thanks to everyone who found that helpful!) because I’m actually covering a piece of my own artwork, and as we all know, there are just some things that are hard to explain during the process. Hence why I’m condensing it down to the nitty gritty. Kinda like a walk through my process if you will. Oh, I almost forgot! I STRONGLY suggest you guys read our previous tutorials that deal with “start to finish” subject matter, especially anything involving Illustrator. If I re-wrote how to do everything we’ve already covered in previous tutorials in this one, I’d be up way past my non-existent bedtime. Now let’s start!

Drawing Skulls with a Wacom Tablet

Adobe Photoshop » Drawing » September 16, 2008
Source gomediazine »

This isn’t exactly a tutorial, but more of a quick “time lapse” demo of a simple illustration technique I use. In this video, I’m going to draw a skull in Photoshop with my Wacom Tablet. I will use a photo of a skull for reference and I will “trace” on top of it on a separate layer. It’s not exactly tracing so to speak, but rather “illustrating” because I’m embellishing linework on top of a photo reference. I’m creating a line drawing of my own liking based off a photograph. Things you should pay attention to are line weights, the variation of thick to thin, stippling shading, and cross hatching.

Ink Bleeding Effect in After Effects (Like Gnarls)

Adobe Photoshop » Effects » September 16, 2008
Source gomediazine »

In this tutorial I’ll recreate a similar look from an older Gnarls Barkley video. The principles I’ll cover are foundational and can be used for some incredible animations other than simply imitating a great music video. Some of what I covered in the Photoshop Bling tutorial is being used here directly in AE. So for those who were wondering why you’d use the Bling effect unless you were designing a hip hop album… remember it’s the principles that that are most valuable… the end result for these tutorials is just to get you excited to go out and create your own. Specifically I will focus on the following in this tutorial: - Using Alpha and Luma Mattes in After Effects - Frame by Frame animation using CS3’s Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects A basic to intermediate knowledge of After Effects and Trapcode Particular is needed to follow along.
