Use of texture in Web design is extremely common. Part of the reason textures are so useful to designers is the relative ease of the integrating one into a design if a high-quality textured image already exists, not to mention the endless possibilities. Fortunately, plenty of photographers and designers are willing to share their work with the rest of us so that we can use them in a number of different ways. In this post, we’ll look at 100 different textures in a wide variety of different categories. Of course, each image is linked to the source where it can be downloaded. As with any type of freebie, be sure to read the terms and conditions or stipulations by the owner before using it in your work.

The weather outside is most definitely frightful for so many right now, and our thoughts go out to all of those facing these dreadful winter storms. To try and remind of happier winter days, not filled with havoc wreaking ice storms we thought we would present a special texture pack of a few snowy ones that we have gathered over the past few days. After a weeks break from blogging, I am eager to share some new textures with you guys. (I hope you all enjoyed the holidays by the way, I know I did). Lately, it seems like I am starting to focus more on unique, handmade textures as opposed to natural textures found in the wild (texture hunting as I like to call it). I like to paint every once in awhile, mostly with acrylics, so this afternoon I broke out the brushes and pigments and went to town. I like the way these textures turned out and I plan on doing more of them in the near future, probably with some watercolors and mixed media thrown in.

I wanted to do some sort of roundabout dedication to our new incoming President with this week’s textures, but I didn’t want to do something too boring. It’s no secret Barack Obama is a smoker considering how widely publicized it’s been. He will join only three other presidents who were smokers: Warren Harding, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and Lyndon Baines Johnson. Here’s to you, Mr. President!

Time for a something a little different today, folks. To create these “light blur” textures I set my shutter speed to around a half a second, aimed my camera at a bright colored object, and spun or moved the camera quickly while the shutter was open. I hope you can find some unique uses for them!
