Those of you who’ve been here before have probably noticed my affinity for elaborate and decorative backgrounds in my projects and I’ve received quite a few requests for a tutorial on the subject… so without further adu, here you go my naughty little monkeys!

Hello everyone I kept receiving mails and requests regarding the process on how do i paint metal, for realtime models. So, I decided to make this tutorial, which will ( hopefully ) guide you thru the process , let me note that this tutorial was written in kinda haste and some stuff might not be correct :P , but here is the ending result that i will explain step by step.

There are dozens of Photoshop tutorials to create this effect... long boring tutorials. I've seen one that actually involves walking around with a piece of paper in your pocket for few days then scan it and work on that image. I've seen tutorials stretching on 6-7 pages to achieve this effect. I don't have time for that... nor the will to read tones of explanations. It's just too much for me. Fortunately, Adobe Photoshop will do all the work for us if we apply the right filters in the right order. Now I will show you the fastest way to do it... the way I like it: fast and with great results.

This one is even faster than creating a paper background with Adobe Photoshop. It's just about applying 3 filters in the right places and the right order. Simple as that! The beauty is that you can repeat the steps countless times and you will always get a new and different result each time.

Filter Forge is an incredibly powerful new Photoshop Plugin. It’s simply amazing. It gives you the power to create your own filters (you must run them from inside Filter Forge though) without any programming knowledge at all. Some technical knowledge about procedural textures and image processing helps a lot but it is not indispensable. Filter Forge is still in an extremely solid Beta phase and you can apply to become a beta tester. You can even get Filter Forge for free if you contribute to the filter library. Submitters of great filters, which eventually may become very popular, will receive Filter Forge for free, but as they state in their web site: "Sounds simple but don’t expect a giveaway, you will have to earn it". This article is not a review since I haven’t tested Filter Forge in its fully potential. Instead, I will show you how to create a great looking wet and muddy rock ground texture that could be VERY difficult to do with Photoshop without the help of external plugins. Just a quick note about Filter Forge: It is an educational program in terms of how you can visualize a diagram of the components of a texture or an effect. Most of the times, we use Photoshop following step by step instructions without really knowing why things happen. This program, instead, displays, in a single view, all the steps or components used to build the texture or filter and you can tweak them in a non-linear way. This feature alone is worth the program’s price in educational terms.
