Creating a stylised male portrait Photoshop tutorial

Adobe Photoshop » Drawing » November 17, 2008
Source computerarts »

Illustrator Evgeny Parfenov explains how to paint a digital portrait using techniques based on geometrical rules. I create a diverse range of illustrations, but I enjoy portraits the most. As an illustrator, I’m attracted to Expressionism, particularly the work of Egon Schiele and Wassily Kandinsky. This style has certain features that appeal to me a great deal. Pictures are extremely stylised, with deliberate deformation, and there’s a tendency to render objects in flat areas and employ sharp, dissonant colours. This is the approach I try to use in my own work. In this tutorial I’ve outlined my approach to creating stylised portraits. The image I’ve used as my example was produced for my online project called tss Magazine. Every month I create a cover or two, illustrated with events or people I find especially interesting. I hope that you find my techniques useful…

Twitterlove Bird, from sketch to vector in Photoshop and Illustrator

Adobe Photoshop » Drawing » November 17, 2008

Following the recent launch of SoulTweet, Graham Smith made a call out for any illustrators to help out with the site. In a few minutes that I had spare, I doodled a couple of birds to offer up for use, and sent across the best of the two for consideration. It didn’t get taken up, so rather than let a sketch go to waste, I decided I’d illustrate it for a tutorial of how I like to use Illustrator.

Making Fur

First things first, I use a drawing tablet (which gives me pressure sensitivity) and few self made fur brushes in Photoshop. They are much more convenient and much less time consuming than drawing each individual piece of hair.

Realistic Eye Texture Painting

This time, I will show how, with some patience and a tablet, you can produce your own eye textures, applicable to your 3D characters. It's a realistic texture, but it can be simplified, depending of your intention and your character's style. This tutorial will also be able to be taken advantage by those that work with 2D, helping them to understand a little of the Photoshop capacities.

Adjusting a Scanned Drawing: An Introduction to Levels

Scanning a drawing, sketch, portfolio piece, even a photo is one of the black arts of photoshop. There are people out there who know so much about the adjustment tools that they can make any scribble look amazing. I'm not one of those people. However, this is the process I go through when I'm scanning one of my drawings. Hopefully you'll pick up a thing or two also.

I have seen many good and interesting articles about how to color pictures in Photoshop. My article, therefore, cover the art of PAINTING directly in Photoshop. I use mainly soft edged airbrushes in different sizes. I work at different layers, the brush set to low opacity and low pressure. To do this picture I had a photo of a friend in the position and lightning I wanted to draw. I used this photo as a reference and a guide line making the picture.

Making of the Blue Dragon

Adobe Photoshop » Drawing » November 12, 2008
Source 3dtotal »

The final image, probably my first attempt in a long, long time to colour something in Photoshop, been too comfortable with Painter. I got too scared with Photoshop’s brush setting and the way the colour mix in PS that I always stick with my Painter. Lately I see a lot of inspiration of awesome work done in Photoshop that still gave the stroke type feel that I try to achieve. So I thought to save this attempt step by step and maybe it could be some help to those that are struggling with Photoshop like me too because in the process of colouring this I learned a bunch of new things myself.

From Dark to Light - A Digital Painting Method

Adobe Photoshop » Drawing » November 12, 2008
Source tutorials.epilogue »

This “dark to light” method is different from what I usually do. Normally, I start my paintings with a middle-toned background and paint in the shadows (darker areas) first, then the lighter ones. Here, I started with a very dark background and built up forms from there, painting almost nothing but lighter tones. The shadow areas in this painting are not painted in, but are parts of the background that were spared.
